Question: How will using Marzano’s Academic Vocabulary Framework improve student achievement in specific subject areas?
    Norms

    1. Each team member will commit to participate actively, arrive on time and start and stop on time.
    2. All members will be respectful, listen to others, and no one will dominate the discussions.
    3. All members will be prepared, focused and totally present, and contribute to the discussions.
    4. We will reach decisions by consensus.
    Team Minutes
    • We looked at several pre-tests and several members plan to change their own format in the future.
    • We discovered that third and fourth grades are doing only Reading vocabulary while Carol is doing most fifth-grade subject areas (interdisciplinary), and sixth is doing academic vocabulary through each separate subject area (reading, math, science, social studies).
    • Cindy Waltrip, Darlene & Mariemma are considering doing a PLC on dysgraphia and sensory issues as academic vocabulary is not as applicable to their curriculum.
    • Darlene & Mariemma have received the word studies (affixes) from Lone Star Learning.
    • We modified our focus question from all subject areas to specific subject areas.
    • PPD members of this PLC stayed later to work on the January Checkpoint #2. We discussed each question and each member will write their own responses with the sharing information.

    Next
Check on the following: grant equipment, Ruth working with 6th grade WOW to create more slides, and getting the digital frames up and going.
Post-test before final PLC so we can look at data results in the last PLC.
Checkout Denise Hammond’s vocabulary strategies; Carol says they’re awesome!

4 – We will reach decisions by consensus.

    Team Minutes
~Ruth helped the team set Smart Goals using the Learning by Doing template & reminded us that smart goals need to be strategic and specific as well as measurable and observable/testable. She also stressed that PLC’s need to begin with data.
~Sherri commented that all of us were looking for ways to expand basic vocabulary for at-risk & bilingual students with different experiences and vocabulary.
~We stated that the reality which birthed this PLC is: Students lack a common academic vocabulary & according to Marzano, this is one of the most important things teachers can use to level the playing field.
~We wrestled with focusing on at-risk or all students & determined to include all students in grades 3-6.
~We filled in our Smart Goal template in all the following categories: Smart Goal, Strategies & Action Steps, Who is Responsible, Target Dates, and Evidence.

    Next PLC Meeting

~All members will meet on Jan. 3 Work Day to share word lists & on Jan. 18 (next PLC) to share our teacher-created pretests.

    Team Discussion & Ideas

~Discussed where we were on V-Tube student teams & preparing digital vocabulary (grant). Ruth worked w/5th WOW students & Lisa C worked w/6th students.
~Bev shared Yummy and the Yuckies that she is using in SAGE for vocabulary building. Students design a picture around the first letter of the vocabulary word. We might use some of these on our digital frames.
~Cindy shared Greek/Latin root vocabulary pictures. She is checking to see if we can get copyright rights to use some of these. (That’s a big, fat “no” so we’ll have kids design their own!)
~Joy shared science words she is using in Headstart.

    Plans
~Use any pertinent vocabulary, not just Academic Vocabulary
~ Deanna & Courtney are starting an after-school team to get the V-Tube moving! Way to go Deanna and Courtney!!

    Next PLC Meeting
~Ruth will help us write SMART Goals.

    Plans
~This grant recipients in this PLC group will also work on the V-Tube: Vocabulary on the Go grant by selecting Academic Vocabulary Student Teams to begin preparing the digital displays which will be placed throughout the school.
~Each PLC member will determine how they will present vocabulary to their student groups.
    ~Submit Team Log to Ruth

    Next PLC Meeting
~Bring sample work from last year to share with new members
~Work on SMART Goal for this PLC

Question: Will using Marzano’s Academic Six-Step Vocabulary Framework improve student achievement on pre- and post-tests of Academic Vocabulary?
    Norms:

    1. Each team member will commit to participate actively, arrive on time and, as a team we’ll start and stop on time
    2. All members will be respectful, listen to others, and no one will dominate the discussions.
    3. All members will be prepared, focused and totally present, and contribute to the discussions.
    4. We will reach decisions by consensus.
    Team Agenda, Discussions & Ideas
~Joy Wilson joined our PLC and is interested in getting ideas for Head Start.
~We looked at Dolly’s Cartoon Vocabulary book. Loved it! We’re all going to order our grade level books to use in addition to Marzano. We can find the info online.
~Looked at the new Academic Vocabulary booklet that Sherri had printed & is using. Everyone likes the pre-printed pages, but the booklets themselves are too fragile (plastic combs). We determined that using plastic pocket/brad folders to contain the pre-printed pages would be the best option. Plastic folders are going on the supply lists for next year.
~We also determined that our PLC is a Work in Progress (WIP) so we have named ourselves the Cool Whips!!

Question:: Will using Marzano’s Academic Six-Step Vocabulary Framework improve student achievement on pre- and post-tests of Academic Vocabulary?

    Discussion:

    • Ruth shared a grant that submitted last fall. Grant included aspects discussed by the Using Station Team and this team.
    • Group discussed/edited the grant - making sure that it followed the research that the group was uncovering.
    • Agreed on grant wording, goals
    • Grant was submitted 2/1/2010

3 – All members will be prepared, focused and totally present, and

    contribute to the discussions.

4 – We will reach decisions by consensus.

    Team Agenda, Discussions & Ideas

~Looked at Marzano’s catalog and resources

~Looked at the Region 10 website & the Academic Vocab. link & resources

~Studied some other Academic Vocabulary student samples

~Mariemma is doing Academic Vocab. in English and Spanish!!

~Mariemma is also doing Academic Vocab. in 4 subjects.

    ~Team Consensus

*pre-test is unnecessary in most grades – kids are at ground zero

*cutting & gluing each session is too time consuming – reformat

*some Region 10 definitions need to be simplified

    Plans

~Will submit Team Log to Ruth

~Members will tweak Marzano’s form for use in their classrooms

    ~Redesign journals to eliminate time-consuming cutting/pasting

    Next PLC Meeting

    ~Bring more sample student work

~Bring redesigned Academic Vocabulary folders, spirals, booklets, etc.

~Cindy will share her Prefix/Suffix/Vocabulary Circles (may add to our Marzano journals)

We submitted a grant that used the idea of academic vocabulary...we need input from you all as we resubmit. You may want to check out my delicious page (www.delicious.com/ruthwj); I think I have some good sources tagged...if you don't already have them!

Until we get the grant :), I have some ideas of how you can make digital flash cards for review. If you are doing the words over several subjects, we can make a review that is in the same format to keep it consistent. Perhaps we would simply change the color of each word for the different subject? I would love to brainstorm with you!

Mariemma -- I would be interested in seeing your academic vocabulary in both languages and, if possible, take some of the vocabulary that would be appropriate for a first grade level and start introducing those words to my kids. Let me know how I can help! This is GREAT and so needed :) Thank you!!!

Can you provide a website that refreshes us on the steps and ideas to utilize in class while your research goes on? I know I went to a short training on this last year during a BEST day but that's been a blurr. Thanks

    Nov 18, 2009

Jay, Region 10 has an Academic Vocab link that has the words and definitions by grade level. But, stop by and get a copy of the basic steps we are using - you may want to try it in your class. Plus I'll show you how to get to the link on Region 10. Sherri

This is a great topic for a PLC since the Marzano’s Academic Six-Step Vocabulary Framework is recommended by the Curriculum Directors of each core subject area in the district. It will be helpful to follow this group's progress so that we can apply their work and results to the math vertical alignment PLC.
Thank you in advance for your help.

How low can you take academic vocabulary? Can I bring it down to a 3-4 year old level?

    Nov 23, 2009

I, like Jay, need to go the the Region 10 website and find the link for this. I would be very interested to know what words are covered in the various subject areas. Surely this has to make a difference in our student's preparation for testing.

Joy - it only goes down to Kinder level officially, but you guys could come up with your own and I could show you the basic steps to implement the progam. Let me know if you're interested.

Second grade encounters academic vocabulary in science and math. I don't have a consistent strategy that I know is effective with my students. Perhaps Marzano would meet my needs, I would like to find out more.

Is this something that I could incorporate into my SAGE program? I am always looking at ideas for strengthing vocabulary.

    Dec 12, 2009

Bev - you absolutely could incorporate this into SAGE. Come by and I'll give you a list of the academic vocab words for all the 6th grade subjects. I'll show you the basic format and you can use it however you want. Also, I'll show you Tara's notebook; it's outstanding, of course!!
